D3AE7E51-99BB-43D0-A337-A9F2F0891CEC(1)Florence, Italy, May 11th: Florence hosted the Electronic Imaging & the Visual Arts (EVA) conference at the Hotel Pierre on May 9th and 10th. This prestigious international conference, one of a series, has drawn speakers from the tops of their fields to convene and discuss the innovations in technology and the arts – as well as the implications that arise from their marriage.

Within the program two papers were dedicated specifically to Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Earlier Mona Lisa’. This masterpiece first captured the world’s imagination when it was presented to the media in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2012 by the Foundation. These papers presented some of the findings of over 40 years of historical research and scientific testing.

  • Professor Vadim Parfenov, of the Department of Quantum Electronics and Opto-Electronic Devices, St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University presented a paper he wrote together with Professor J. F. Asmus of the Department of Physics & Center for Advanced Nanotechnology, University of California, concerning a new computer method for the comparative analysis of paintings. The use of digitalization is groundbreaking for making the final decision on the attribution of paintings in controversial situations when traditional methods of examination do not work or where there is a disparity in the subjective opinions of experts.

  • Jean-Paul Carradori presented a paper entitled “Technology and Theatrical Tradition in Art Exhibitions: Earlier Mona Lisa in Shanghai” in which explained the importance of lighting masterpieces in very particular ways to ensure the integrity of the visual experience.

Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Earlier Mona Lisa’” – an innovative interactive exhibition – was developed to explain the historical evidence supporting the attribution, the discovery of the painting, the science, mathematics and comparative analyses that lead to the conclusion of it being a forgotten masterpiece by Leonardo. The painting itself was shown to the public within this exhibition at prestigious venues in Singapore (2014) and Shanghai (2016). The European Premiere of the exhibition and the painting ‘Earlier Mona Lisa’ will take place in 2019.
