The Mona Lisa Foundation

La Prima Monna Lisa – Torino

From 24 November 2023 to 26 May 2024, the Mona Lisa Foundation, in collaboration with Sm.Art
and WeAreBeside, will present, in the prestigious Promotrice delle Belle Arti in Turin’s Valentino
Park, the “Earlier Mona Lisa”. This portrait of the Florentine lady, Lisa del Giocondo, was painted
some ten years before the legendary Louvre Mona Lisa, which is now permanently housed in the
Paris Museum.

The Earlier Mona Lisa is presented to the public in an interactive, multimedia exhibition that
illustrates the fascinating mysteries and discoveries surrounding the painting. Films with historical
reconstructions allow visitors to examine the scientific and historical evidence supporting the
attribution of the painting, whilst being immersed in the world and art of Leonardo, the Mona Lisa – discovering who the most famous woman of all time really is – and the Italian Renaissance.

The exhibition leads visitors through eight galleries and culminates with a view of the portrait painting, which is displayed in a dedicated room and housed inside an illuminated display case. Each visitor will be given a tablet containing the audio-visual tour and 30 short films that take them through the various sections of the exhibition, investigating the historical evidence and scientific examinations, including speeches and interviews with leading international Leonardo scholars.

Dr. Markus A Frey, President of the Mona Lisa Foundation stated: “Following a very successful
exhibition in Florence to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo, we are delighted to continue the painting’s worldwide tour and to organise a second exhibition in Italy, providing the public with a new opportunity to see the masterpiece in such a beautiful setting.”

Joël Feldman, General Secretary of the Mona Lisa Foundation observed: “This exhibition gives us the opportunity to also present the massive strides that have been made in the past few years to cement the attribution of the work to Leonardo. These include publications and research from experts originating from all over the world; in fact, just in the last 4 years more than half a dozen books have been published presenting new proofs bringing the attribution beyond doubt.”
